What To Do On Catalina Island in the Spring

Catalina

Are you planning an island-style spring break? Catalina is a great destination to visit in the spring. You get the benefits of beautiful (sometimes, rainy) weather, and you don’t have to navigate the bigger crowds that the busier summer season brings. In the springtime, Catalina is a special kind of paradise. Whether you’re a thrill seeker or seeking some peace and quiet, there are adventures of all kinds to be had on Catalina. At the Aurora Hotel, we aim to be your home away from home—and then some—when you visit Avalon. Our staff can help you to book experiences on the island and offer advice for planning the perfect spring day, depending on your preferences. Read on to learn a bit more about what to do on Catalina Island in the spring.

Be a foodie. Allow the Aurora Hotel to recommend one of our favorite activities: a Catalina Food Tour. When you book this excursion, you’re signing up to experience the flavors, sights, stories, and history of Catalina. On this tour, you’ll visit five restaurants and specialty food shops in Avalon. Enjoy award-winning entrees, desserts, and beverages as guides give insight into the food and local history.

Underwater on Catalina Island in the Spring

Get in the water. Catalina is the perfect place to snorkel, scuba, or even snuba. Most of the waters around the island are marine protected areas. Visitors can explore these underwater sanctuaries, seeing some amazing sea life. One of the most popular snorkel and dive spots is the Casino Dive Park, which sits at the base of the gorgeous Catalina Casino.

Learn something new. Make a visit to the Catalina Museum where you can explore the island's history, art, and culture through a variety of engaging exhibits. This is a good indoor activity for all ages, and it’s a fun way to get acquainted with the heritage of Avalon and the island.

Be among the wildflowers. There is nothing like the beautiful blooming that takes place in the island’s interior in the spring. Plenty of colorful wildflowers blossom this time of year, accompanied by greens, khakis, and colorful hues of other native trees and brush. To see some of Catalina’s flora up close, take a hike through the island’s canyons. Catalina has numerous hiking trails with varying difficulty levels. If you want to stay close to Avalon, visit the Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Gardens. The staff at the Aurora Hotel can help you plan for the best day of hiking for your party.

Go fishing. Spring weather is great for a day of fishing. You can opt to take fishing excursions through various vendors in Avalon, or you can even fish right off the Green Pier. Be sure to get the right permits before you begin.

Take a tour. While most of the town of Avalon is walkable, Catalina Taxi and Tours offers a variety of guided Jeep tours that help you to explore the island’s more rugged terrain. You can spot some wildlife—like the Catalina island fox, deer, or bison. You’ll also enjoy panoramic views, seeing what many visitors don’t often get the chance to see.

Get in a round. The island has options for both mini golf and regular golf. The mini course is great for a family activity. For the more serious golfer, the Catalina course is just 9 holes, allowing for more time to explore the rest of the island during your stay.

Dine (or drink) al fresco. Spring evenings tend to be warmer and brighter, with sunnier mornings and longer happy hours. Enjoy your continental breakfast from the Aurora Hotel on our rooftop deck with some of the best ocean views in Avalon. There are spots for sitting, eating, reading, and soaking up springtime sunshine on the roof. More of an evening person? Book our Dash of Romance, Authentic Catalina Adventure, or Anniversary Escape package, and bring your complimentary bottle of wine to our deck.

Have a beach day. There are a few options for beachfront fun around Avalon. Walk from your room at the Aurora to any of the local beaches. You can relax, rent kayaks, go paddle boarding, or swim.

Go on a spree. Even in an island paradise, spring showers can happen. Take the fun indoors, and shop the stores in Avalon. You’ll find everything from your regular souvenir fare to finer clothing and resort wear, jewelry, pottery, art, and more.

Be playful. Sometimes it’s fun to be a kid. Avalon has a little local arcade where you can compete in basketball, skeeball, ball toss, and even bowling. You can also try to win tickets for prizes. Connected to the arcade is a restaurant for food and drinks after your fun.
